The Pinisi schooner, Kita, is a remarkable embodiment of Indonesia's rich maritime tradition, originating from South Sulawesi. For centuries, the Bugis and Konjo peoples have masterfully crafted these iconic wooden schooners, traditionally built from ironwood and teak. While Pinisi vessels were once primarily used for trade and fishing, Kita has been transformed into a luxurious yacht, representing a seamless blend of tradition and modernity. In 2017, UNESCO recognized the shipbuilding tradition of South Sulawesi as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, honoring the meticulous craftsmanship and ceremonial processes passed down through generations. Kita was constructed with strict adherence to UNESCO guidelines, preserving the authenticity of this ancient tradition. With its two masts, seven sails, distinctive curved stern, and prow, Kita navigates the Indonesian seas with elegance and grace. The ship’s construction involved deeply rooted rituals, including ceremonies for keel-laying and launching, emphasizing the spiritual connection between the builders and the sea. As a sail training vessel, Kita has introduced Indonesia’s youth to the maritime heritage that surrounds them.
